1. Original paint (原厂漆)

Check this first. Original paint means no significant accident bodywork. It is listed explicitly on most Chinese listings (原厂漆 or 原装漆). Resprayed vehicles may hide structural damage, so confirm original-paint status and request daylight photos where inconsistencies show.

2. Mileage verification

Low mileage is attractive but odometer tampering happens. Red flags: mileage implausibly low for the vehicle’s age, worn pedals or steering wheel inconsistent with the reading, and service records that do not match. Request a full service history and a third-party inspection that verifies mileage.

3. Accident and claims history

Chinese vehicle history can be checked via the national registration system. Look for zero claims, no write-off or structural damage, and no flood-damage history — particularly important for vehicles from southern China.

4. Engine and transmission

The two most expensive components to repair. Ask for a cold-start video (immediate start, no smoke or odd noise), a transmission video showing smooth shifts across all gears, and any drivetrain service records.

5. Rust and corrosion

Less common in Chinese vehicles than Japanese or European imports, but check the underbody and chassis rails, wheel arches, and door sills. Coastal and northern (harsh-winter) cities show more corrosion than dry inland regions.

6. Tyre condition

Often overlooked. Check the four-digit sidewall date code (e.g. 2319 = week 23 of 2019). Tyres over six years old should be replaced regardless of tread, so factor that into your cost.

7. Documentation completeness

For a clean export you need the vehicle registration certificate (行驶证), the ownership certificate (机动车登记证), a valid annual inspection sticker (年检), and no outstanding fines or liens. Irregular paperwork causes delays at both Chinese export customs and your destination port.

8. Age and import compliance

Check your destination’s age restrictions before buying — Nigeria allows up to 15 years, Kenya requires 8 years or newer, the UAE has no strict federal limit. Buying a non-compliant vehicle is an expensive mistake.
