China is the world’s largest new car market and has been for over a decade. That sustained volume means its used car market is now enormous β€” and for international buyers, it represents a genuine opportunity to acquire European and Japanese luxury vehicles at prices well below what equivalent cars cost elsewhere. This guide covers the three most popular luxury brands among buyers sourcing from China: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus.

Why China for luxury cars?

Chinese consumers buy luxury cars at a remarkable rate and upgrade frequently. A BMW 5 Series bought new in 2020 may appear on the used market two or three years later with 30,000–50,000 km, often in excellent condition and frequently with full factory specification. The result is a steady supply of late-model, low-mileage luxury vehicles priced 35–55% below equivalent stock in Europe or the Gulf.

There are real considerations too. Servicing costs for European brands can be significant in markets without established dealer networks, so factor this in. Japanese brands like Lexus typically carry lower ongoing maintenance costs.

BMW

3 Series β€” The benchmark executive saloon. The F30 (2012–2018) and G20 (2019–present) are both widely available, with reliable engines and good global parts supply.

5 Series (G30, 2017–present) β€” Probably the most balanced choice for international buyers. The 520i and 530i are relatively economical; the 540i and M550i add performance at higher running cost.

X5 (G05, 2018–present) β€” One of the most capable and reliable large luxury SUVs available. The 30i and 40i petrol variants suit markets with variable fuel quality.

7 Series β€” Available at significant discounts in China. Genuine executive presence, but maintenance and parts can be expensive without a BMW dealer network nearby.

Key checks: service history and oil-service intervals, timing-chain condition on 4-cylinder N20 and B48 engines, and any signs of deferred maintenance. Approximate FOB prices: 3 Series G20 (2021, 30,000 km) $22,000–$28,000; 5 Series G30 530i (2020, 40,000 km) $28,000–$36,000; X5 G05 30i (2021, 35,000 km) $38,000–$48,000.

Mercedes-Benz

C-Class (W205/W206) β€” The W205 (2014–2021) is widely available and well-regarded; the W206 commands a premium. C200 and C260 are the most common variants in China.

E-Class (W213, 2016–present) β€” A consistent favourite. The E300L long-wheelbase version offers exceptional rear space.

S-Class (W222/W223) β€” Bought in significant numbers in China. Used 2018–2022 examples represent considerable value, though complexity raises maintenance costs.

GLE / GLS β€” The GLS in particular is one of the most prestigious and practical family SUVs available, often fully optioned in the Chinese market.

Watch the M264 4-cylinder engines (C200, E200) for oil-consumption issues; the M256 inline-six is excellent. Check air suspension thoroughly where fitted. Approximate FOB prices: C-Class W205 C200 (2020, 35,000 km) $20,000–$26,000; E-Class W213 E300L (2020, 40,000 km) $28,000–$38,000; GLE W167 (2021, 30,000 km) $42,000–$55,000.

Lexus

Lexus stands apart on long-term reliability. Toyota Group engineering translates into lower running costs and fewer surprises β€” a major advantage in markets with limited dealer networks.

RX (2016–present) β€” The most popular Lexus in China. The RX300 and RX350 are practical, comfortable, and hold value well.

ES (2018–present) β€” The ES300h hybrid is particularly compelling: excellent economy and a very reliable hybrid system.

LX (LX600, 2022–present) β€” The Lexus take on the Land Cruiser 300; outstanding for demanding terrain.

LS (2017–present) β€” The flagship saloon, available at significant discounts versus new prices.

Lexus vehicles are among the most reliable in the market. Approximate FOB prices: RX300 (2020, 40,000 km) $28,000–$36,000; ES300h (2021, 30,000 km) $30,000–$38,000; LX600 (2023, 15,000 km) $75,000–$95,000.

Making your decision

Lowest running costs point to Lexus, especially the ES300h hybrid. For driving dynamics, the BMW 5 Series or 3 Series. For passenger comfort and prestige, the Mercedes E-Class or S-Class. For off-road capability, the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE/GLS, or Lexus LX. For outright value, the Mercedes C-Class W205 or BMW 3 Series F30.
